In short
- Study Buddy is a spelling practice app for children, used with a grown-up’s account.
- The Basic plan stays free. Paid plans renew by themselves each month or year until you cancel.
- Cancel any time in Grown-ups → Account → Manage plan: your plan lasts until the end of the time you’ve paid for, then you’re on the Basic plan.
- Payments aren’t refunded, except when we’ve made a mistake, such as charging you twice or after you cancelled.
- How we handle your family’s information is in the privacy notice.
Who can use it
- Accounts are for grown-ups: you must be at least 18 and the parent or legal guardian of the children you add, or have their permission.
- Children use Study Buddy through a grown-up’s account, with the grown-up responsible for how it’s used.
- Keep your password to yourself. What happens in your account is your responsibility, so tell us if you think someone else has used it.
- While Study Buddy is in its pilot, accounts are by invitation.
Plans and payments
- The plans: the Basic plan (free), the One Child plan and the Family plan. What each includes and costs is in Grown-ups → Account → Your plan. Prices are in US dollars. If sales tax applies where you live, it’s shown before you pay.
- Paying: Stripe takes payments for us. A paid plan is charged when you choose it, then at the start of each month or year, and renews by itself until you cancel.
- Changing plan: in Manage plan, any time, and the change happens straight away. Moving up, you pay the difference for the rest of the current month or year. Moving down, what’s left of the plan you paid for becomes a credit that pays your next bills. It isn’t paid back to your card, and it can’t be exchanged for cash.
- Cancelling: in Manage plan. You keep your plan until the end of the month or year you’ve paid for, then move to the Basic plan, and nothing more is charged.
- Moving to the Basic plan (cancelling, or a free pilot plan ending): extra children and spelling lists are kept but paused. You choose which child plays, and the list in use stays. Choosing a plan again brings them back.
- Payments that don’t go through: Stripe tries the card again over the next few weeks and emails you to update it. If it still can’t be charged, the plan ends and you move to the Basic plan.
- Price changes: we’ll tell you at least 30 days before a new price applies to your plan, so you can cancel first if you want to.
- Pilot families: we may give families in the pilot a plan for free, for as long as we tell you. When it ends, you move to the Basic plan unless you choose a paid one.
Refunds
- Payments aren’t refunded, in whole or in part, including for the rest of a month or year after you cancel or change plan. Cancelling stops the next payment, and your plan lasts until the end of the time you’ve paid for.
- When we’ve made a mistake (charging you twice, after you cancelled, or the wrong amount), write to us and we’ll refund what we shouldn’t have charged.
- Deleting your account ends a paid plan straight away, with no refund for the rest of its month or year, because your family’s data, plan included, is deleted. To keep using your plan until it ends, cancel it instead and delete the account later.
- None of this takes away a right to a refund that the law where you live gives you.
Using Study Buddy
- Use it for practicing at home, for your own family. Don’t try to get into other families’ accounts, overload or break the app, or copy it.
- Your spelling lists (words, sentences and meanings you type in) stay yours. You let us keep them and use them to run the app for your family. Don’t put anything in them that isn’t right for children or that you don’t have the right to use.
- Ours: the app, its games, characters and art, and the sentences and meanings written for it belong to Study Buddy Learning. You may use them through the app, not copy or sell them.
- From open sources: some word data keeps its own license, which these terms don’t change: pronunciations from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary (BSD), example sentences from Tatoeba (CC BY 2.0 FR), and meanings from Simple English Wiktionary (CC BY-SA 4.0) and Open English WordNet (CC BY 4.0). The app’s collection of meanings is shared under CC BY-SA 4.0. The words a spelling list can have come from the English Speller Database (SCOWL), copyright Kevin Atkinson. Words kept out of the app include the List of Dirty, Naughty, Obscene, and Otherwise Bad Words (Shutterstock and contributors, CC BY 4.0).
- We may close an account that’s used to harm the app or other people, after telling you why where we can.
What we promise, and what we can’t
- We work to keep Study Buddy running, correct and helpful, but we can’t promise it will always be available, free of mistakes, or right for every child. It doesn’t replace a teacher, and we can’t promise any result at school.
- We’re still building Study Buddy, so games and features can change. If we stop offering it, we’ll tell you first, refund what’s left of a paid plan, and give you time to download your family’s data.
- As far as the law allows, we aren’t responsible for indirect losses, and what we owe for any claim is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before it. Some places don’t allow these limits, and then they apply only as far as the law there allows.
Ending
- You can stop any time: cancel a paid plan in Manage plan, or delete everything with Grown-ups → Account → Delete account.
- If we change these terms in a way that matters, we’ll tell you in the app or by email before the change applies. Using Study Buddy after that means you accept the new terms.
